The four quartets performed here, composed between 1976 and 1990, show the rich diversity of German new music. In Apo Do (1982), commissioned by the Athens Goethe Institute, Mathias Spahlinger confronts the depths of war tragedy. Spahlinger has a penchant for intense textures, taking delight in grating noises and wringing strong emotions from sparse sounds. Walter Zimmermann's shimmering textures result from a complex tuning system. His Festina lente draws from ethnomusicology, philosophy, and visual art. York Höller's Antiphon successfully integrates the acoustic with the electronically modified quartet. Robert Platz explores linear time processes in his rather austere Quartet. --Robert Reigle
