Fantastic Variations on an Old Rhyme (1917) is all that survives of what Brian intended to be a Fantastic Symphony. Essentially, it's a theme-and- variations on the childhood chant "Three Blind Mice". The symphonies on this release are much darker in character. They have all the Brian trademarks of interrupted rhythms and outlandish (and unexpected) fanfare-like pronouncements. What gives them unity is there three-movement cohesion. This strategy of allegro/andante/allegro allows Brian to develop his ideas and have fun with them. Brian, like Robert Simpson, is a post-Romantic with an adventurer's heart. Recommended. --Paul Cook
