Telemann is known primarily for his chamber music and concertos, but he was equally prolific in church music, producing many more Lutheran church cantatas than Bach did. Certainly few of Telemann's cantatas reach the exalted heights of Bach's best work, but many of them are attractive. The three cantatas on this disc are similar in structure to most of Bach's cantatas, with distinct choruses, recitatives, and arias and a closing chorale; they're unusual for their instrumentation, which includes a cornetto and, in two of the cantatas, sackbuts (Renaissance trombones). These 17th-century instruments were considered archaic by the 1710s and 1720s; Telemann seems to have chosen them deliberately to give a solemn, "churchy" feel to certain movements. The overall mood of these cantatas, however, is serenely joyful. Telemann also writes several elaborate obbligato parts for solo cornetto: Arno Paduch plays the parts well, but he's recorded a bit distantly vis-a-vis the vocal soloists--who, by the way, sing the "choruses" as well. Those soloists, young stalwarts of Germany's early-music scene, sound a bit uncomfortable in their fastest passages and highest notes, but they sing with spirit. These are good period-instrument renditions of attractive, seldom-performed repertory--a good addition to a Baroque collection. --Matthew Westphal
