In the minds of most classical listeners, Claudio Monteverdi is the solitary titan of the early Italian Baroque. In fact, Monteverdi was the most important figure in a tremendously active musical culture in 17th-century Italy--a culture examined thoroughly in Ensemble La Fenice's series The Heritage of Monteverdi. Volume 5 of this splendid series presents 17th-century music for the Christmas season: a trio for two sopranos and tenor narrating the Annunciation by Ignazio Donati; a glowing sonata for two violins and flute by Giovanni Picchi; the breathlessly virtuosic tenor solo Volate caelites by Orazio Tarditi; and a beguiling (and sometimes exciting) Pastorale for organ by Bernardo Storace. One of the highlights is the lullaby Hor che tempo di dormire by Tarquinio Merula, a soprano solo over a repeating two-note bass line suggestive of Mary obsessively rocking her child as she contemplates the torments he will suffer to redeem humankind. The performances by La Fenice, the veteran tenor John Elwes, and the young sopranos Maria Cristina Kiehr and Kathelijne van Laethem are radiant. --Matthew Westphal
