Alpha Productions producer and director Jean-Paul Combet has, as he puts it, been haunted from childhood by J.S. Bach. Here he presents a new version of the Goldberg Variations, along with the canons and German songs related to them. The 2CD recording is magnificently produced with extensive liner notes and booklet in English, French and German. This newly researched recording features the extraordinary musicianship of the Café Zimmermann, Céline Frisch and Dominique Visse.

On the last page of his printed copy of the Variations, after the phrase, "Aria da capo è fine", Bach took up his pen and wrote a series of fourteen canons on the first eight notes of the bass line heard in the Aria and its thirty variations. In the only portrait of Bach whose origins are clearly attributed, he posed holding a slightly modified copy of the thirteenth of these canons. With a slight smile playing on his lips and a sparkle in his eye, Bach holds three short lines of music, a few cryptic notes, an example of perpetual motion. It was not with his great vocal music or his harpsichord suites that Bach chose to be painted, but with this insignificant slip of paper which contained the quintessence of his music.
