Johannes Mattheson's professional activities are impressive: he was a composer, organist, harpsichordist, singer, conductor, lexicographer, theorist, translater, publisher, diplomat, jurist, architect, and an expert in trade and finance. A close friend of Handel, his output as a composer is colossal, including operas, oratorios, and Passions, cantatas, chamber works and harpsichord or organ pieces. Tragically, most of the scores were lost in the bombing of Hamburg in the Second World War. But a number of those were indeed saved.
