George Enescu: Symphony No. 3; Romanian Poem for Orchestra

The Romanian Poem is a colorful early work full of folk song and dance rhythms. As with all of Enescu's work, it's immaculately crafted and extremely well orchestrated. While his early works have always enjoyed a measure of popularity, his symphonies have been almost totally neglected. They are huge, lush, romantic pieces that are almost too complicated for their own good. It's not that they are especially difficult to listen to, but there is so much going on all the time, and they are so difficult to play, that they will always be rarities in the concert hall. Home is the perfect place to take a crack at them, as they are ultimately very beautiful, very sincere compositions. This authentic performance makes the best case for the music. --David Hurwitz
