Singleton's music takes its inspiration from a diverse range of American musical sources, but he suggests an almost Russian temperament. Shadows (1987) is clearly a masterpiece, an orchestral tone poem that builds upon a series of delicate melodies with a constant string-led ambience underneath. It's a post-modern strategy that works because Singleton's kept the melodies tonal. (This is the kind of music that makes you sit up and take notice.) After Fallen Crumbs (1987) is a brilliant--if angry--orchestral fanfare; A Yellow Rose Petal (1982) is full of orchestral fireworks. This is a highly recommended CD. --Paul Cook
