Purcell is universally regarded as the greatest native English composer (Handel was really German) before Elgar, but his music survives in a strangely fragmentary state. This is due to the fact that much of it was composed for the theater, to be performed between the acts or in association with spoken work plays. In other words, the best of it is like a film score, consisting of songs, "cues," and action music that needs a little careful editing to survive away from it's original context. This marvelous disc takes all of the orchestral music from two of Purcell's finest scores (The Fairy Queen is the greatest of them all), and collects it in the form of two superbly played and recorded suites. It's the ideal introduction to the composer. --David Hurwitz
