Great Violin Concerti

Many lovers of Romantic violin concertos, including the great violinist Nathan Milstein, find Goldmark's Violin Concerto worthwhile. Ruggiero Ricci is obviously one of those, since he plays the music with great affection for its unmemorable themes and its longwinded developments. Both of these Saint-Saëns violin concertos are rarities compared with his only well-known violin concerto, the Third. Number 1 is one of those occasional works where Saint-Saëns's inspiration isn't present and all that's left is his competence in construction. However, the Second Concerto is an inspired work, just as entertaining as the Third. These aren't live performances, but the violin playing and orchestral support are excellent and the sound is reasonably lifelike. --Leslie Gerber
