Souvenirs of the long career of Ruggiero Ricci flow like water from this Hong Kong label, which offers no annotations or even recording dates, but does have pretty decent sound. , Ricci is joined on this disc by Dean Dixon, a conductor whose race prevented him from having the career he deserved in his native country. He was more appreciated in Europe and Australia, but few of his recordings remain available. Here he gives very idiomatic support in the Stravinsky, where the violinist's sometimes dry tone works well. The Shostakovich, with Russia's greatest conductor of the 20th century, is a powerful performance, well worth hearing. --Leslie Gerber
