Album Description
"A Choral Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - The First Ten Years" is a compilation CD. Since 1989, The Choral Arts Society of Washington has produced an annual Tribute to Dr. King at the Kennedy Center. After Dr. King's assassination, DC community leaders began planning a free concert to honor the slain civil-rights leader. Choral Arts and Music Director Norman Scribner were among several choruses taking part in those concerts until 1976. In 1989, in celebration of the establishment of a national holiday in Dr. King's honor, Choral Arts began annual choral tributes at the Kennedy Center. Since then, hundreds of Washington-area musicians and dancers have come together on stage to celebrate Dr. King's life and achievements. After many requests from audience members and past participants, Choral Arts produced this CD. A compilation of music from the first ten Tributes, it was recorded live at the Kennedy Center. The CD's liner notes detail the life of Dr. King, the civil rights movement and how the Choral Tribute started. Any profits will go towards offsetting costs of the CD, future tributes and the organization's community and education activities. The Choral Arts Society of Washington is one of the major symphonic choruses in the US. With a yearly subscription series at the Kennedy Center, the chorus also performs regularly with the National Symphony Orchestra, now under the direction of Leonard Slatkin, and has performed with other major orchestras from such cities as Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Prague and Cracow.
