Perfezione Di Uno Spirito

Peaceful, sun-drenched sounds from the experimental Sicilian composer. The central work on this disc--The Perfection of a Subtle Spirit, a 40-minute work for flute, voice, and wind percussion, fittingly dedicated to Luigi Nono--is haunting in its unadorned austerity, the more so after one finds that Sciarrino intended it as a threnody for the Chernobyl disaster. The other two works--a brief flute solo and a piece for two flutes and piano--are similarly meditative explorations of radically restricted aural landscapes. --Joshua Cody
