What a pleasure it is to listen to this expressive, beautiful, eminently civilized music! It reminds us that Haydn is not a lesser Mozart. The range of expression and emotion in the six Quartets of Op. 76 is amazing, ranging from ethereal beauty to stomping peasant dances. Reading through Arcana's excellent booklet, we become aware of the scholarly work that has gone into making these recordings, including such factors as period instruments, the seating of the musicians (first violinist on the left, second on the right), and the judicious, considered inclusion of first-movement repeats (some but not all of the development/recapitulation sections). The playing is superbly balanced and coordinated, although even this ensemble's first violinist--like nearly all others--has some intonation problems in the opening movement of Op. 76, No. 2. The Festetics players are a bit more inhibited with Haydn's peasant movements than the Tatrai Quartet, which, despite some technical limitations, remains the ideal Haydn ensemble. But these beautifully recorded performances have so much to offer that they still belong in any chamber music lover's library. --Leslie Gerber
