Editorial Reviews
The Patriot Ledger 11/23/99
"All have an unpretentious yet deeply artful simplicity, sung in Estonian in a pure, haunting style... [with] beauty and range..."
The Patriot Ledger 11/23/99
"These are songs of crystalline clarity... with intriguing melodies and spare, open harmonies...[reflecting] her musical good taste and passion."
Album Description
Christmas songs by mostly Estonian composers sung mostly a cappella in 3- to 5-part harmony, spanning the centuries of medieval, traditional, and contemporary Baltic song. The sound of "Jõulud" can be described as that of an acoustic, Nordic Enya, arranged and sung by young soprano Sirje Aleksandra Viise. A collection of songs and arrangements from the artist's childhood and time in Estonia, these are reflections of a tiny, resilient Nordic nation that endured centuries of oppression to emerge passionate and alive. Six tracks include a simple piano accompaniment by pianist Mall Kiil.
