Amazon.com essential recording
This, Toscanini's December 1940 broadcast Missa Solemnis, is a weightier, yet more flexible affair than his relatively streamlined, hard-driven 1952 commercial recording, with a vocal quartet of rare distinction. Magic Talent's source appears to be the same one used for previous releases on AS Disc and Music & Arts, all which sustain a conspicuous pitch drop in the Gloria. At least no one "corrected" the glaring horn flub at the Credo's outset. Momentary flaws aside, Toscanini's fusion of fire, fantasy, and discipline adds up to a performance that reconciles architecture with passion like few other Missas on record. --Jed Distler
