Shostakovich was only 19 when he finished his first symphony. While it can be seen as filled with boyish enthusiasm, one needn't look too far to find discomfort and trouble, as is usual with this composer. Except for a solo-piano part, it's pretty straightforward as far as form is concerned, and it reminds listeners of many other, earlier composers. Haitink's reading lacks thrills and chills, but it's clean and clear. The Third Symphony is no masterpiece, either, but in its final movement, a chorus enters, praising May Day, and it certainly gets the blood boiling. Elsewhere, there's the usual nervous energy and fascinating tone clusters. Bernard Haitink leads the LPO in a superb reading. --Robert Levine
