SCHMIDT: Organ Works / Andeas Juffinger / 4CD
Editorial Reviews Franz Schmidt (1874-1939) Organ Works Andreas Juffinger, organ Nowadays, Franz Schmidt (1874-1939) is hardly listed among the popular names of the great classical composers of the 20th century. Capriccio produced the only recording of his opera "Notre Dame" so far (2 CDs: 10 248/49); occasionally, his oratorio "Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln (The book of seven seals)" can be found in concert programmes. The fact that Franz Schmidt composed a large number of works for organ is almost forgotten today. Capriccio now republishes a new edition of a comprehensive 4 CD anthology with organist Andreas Juffinger performing on the organ of the Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin collated in a multi-pack for the first time. In terms of formal handling, Schmidt does not break any new ground in his works for organ, but is rather oriented on traditional forms such as the prelude or fugue, variation, toccata etc. However, he fills these model forms with his own late Romanticist, colourful language and highly virtuoso demands.
