With excellent sets of Brahms piano music by Idel Biret (Naxos) and Julius Katchen (London) available at bargain prices, Peter Rösel's set (originally recorded for LPs in East Germany) seems doomed to oblivion. That's a pity. Like Biret and Katchen, Rösel has the massive technique required for this difficult music and the temperament to make a vivid experience out of it. His Handel Variations is sometimes even too big for the music, but if that's an error, it's one in the right direction. The Ballades are appropriately dramatic, the Intermezzi appropriately intimate. It's a pleasure to hear a pianist with such a wide approach to great music, and the analog recordings still sound pretty good. --Leslie Gerber
