Robert Levin is a daring fellow. Instead of playing Mozart's cadenzas, he improvises his own. And he improvises elsewhere, filling in with the orchestra when no piano part is written and frequently decorating Mozart's text. His object in doing all of this is to bring us closer to Mozart's time, when a pianist would have done these things automatically (as we know Mozart himself did). Even more importantly, he brings the music to life with his alert playing, catching the spirit of each movement. Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music provide strong collaboration, and you can hear every one of those tasty lines Mozart wrote into the orchestral parts. --Leslie Gerber
