Paul Hindemith was primarily an instrumental composer, but there were brief periods when he composed music for a cappella choir. He greatly admired the choral music of the Renaissance (particularly madrigals), and he believed that a cappella singing was immensely valuable as both teaching tool and community activity. On the present disc, the Berlin Radio Chorus performs a sampling of Hindemith's shorter choral works. The composer made no attempt to emulate Renaissance harmonies or counterpoint (as does, for example, Vaughan Williams's Mass in G Minor): Hindemith deliberately kept the part-writing simple enough and the modern harmonies accessible enough to be suitable for any amateur choir. More complex (and more interesting) are the nine brief, lighthearted canons that close the disc: Hindemith wrote them for particular people and occasions--often printing them on card stock and using them as Christmas, congratulation, or thank-you cards. --Matthew Westphal
