The operetta composer Rudolf Friml (1879-1972) was also an elegant pianist. He made these recordings during a visit to his native Prague in 1964. On most of the CD he plays operetta medleys, excerpts, and improvisations. The music is trivial, but Friml plays with such charm that he puts a smile on my face and suspends my criticism for a while. He also plays very well for a man in his mid-80s. The disc includes a set of unimportant songs such as Friml's Op. 1. They are also charming, but texts would have helped. This isn't an important reissue, but it's fun. --Leslie Gerber
