The brief return of Catholicism to England during the reign of Mary Tudor (1553-58) brought with it some outstanding choral masterpieces, created by composers sympathetic to the Roman rite and its Latin-text-based musical tradition. This fine program features works from this period: specifically, works that may have been performed at the great Christmas Day feast following the announcement of Mary's pregnancy in 1554, or at Mary's wedding to Philip of Spain the previous year. Included are one of Thomas Tallis's most beautiful yet rarely heard masses, the seven-part Puer natus, as well as John Sheppard's justly famous Trinity antiphon Libera nos. The three pieces by Francisco Guerrero, especially the stunningly beautiful Ave virgo sanctissima, remind us that Spain's own composers made contributions to the sacred repertoire equal in sophistication to the English masters. The Sixteen deliver some of their best performances, their ideal blend owing much to their combination of male altos with perfectly matched soprano voices. --David Vernier
