They don't do Brahms like this anymore! These historical recordings from the mid '50s, in very good sound, are absolutely crazy by today's standards. Tempos change bar by bar, the playing of the brass is coarse and the climaxes overblown. It's all incredibly exciting and not for the faint of heart. If you really are a collector of Brahms symphonies, you will want to hear these nutty, characterful performances. --David Hurwitz
