Virginia Black's recital of Scarlatti sonatas has been a prime recommendation for years. Not only is she a superb artist, she has selected an instrument with outstanding tonal qualities. Too often recitals of harpsichord music wind up sounding--to use Thomas Beecham's phrase--like "two skeletons copulating on a tin roof." This instrument has a diamond-like clarity and fineness of tone that never clatters, and the recorded sound is absolutely luminous. Most Scarlatti recitals need to be taken in small doses (which is what the composer himself intended, of course), but here is one that you can listen to in full without fatigue. I don't know much about Virginia Black--there's precious little biography here--and I've never heard her play anything but these Scarlatti sonatas. But she is a hell of a Scarlatti player! She has selected some of his most fearsome works, like the extravagantly difficult K. 120, and tears through them all with tremendous brio.
