Thalberg: Les Soirees de Pausilippe

Thalberg, who lived from 1813 to 1871, was one of the most famous virtuoso pianists of his day, famous for his "third hand" effect and other technical tricks. On the rare occasions when you get to hear Thalberg played on recordings, it's usually a showpiece. But this suite of two dozen works is made up of simple, charming salon pieces with hardly a difficulty to be heard anywhere. Unfortunately, Thalberg lacks the melodic gift that could have made his music even more effective and memorable. But it's still charming, especially in the mellow performance by Francesco Nicolosi. --Leslie Gerber
