This new live recording of excerpts from Wagner's Ring sports some rough and ready playing at a couple of points, but it's also very exciting and in places absolutely spectacular. The Staatskapelle Dresden is historically Germany's finest orchestra (better than the vastly overhyped Berlin Philharmonic), and the collapse of Communism has finally given listeners in the West the chance to appreciate this great tradition of playing on a regular basis. Not only do you get all of the best orchestral bits from Wagner's epic, but Donald Runnicles also throws in the "Siegfried Idyll," meaning that all of the Ring music (or Ring-influenced music) is available on this single disc.
