Cello & Piano Sonata in G Minor

Daniel Shafran seldom appeared in the West, but he was one of Russia's great cellists and recorded frequently there. The eminent pianist and teacher Yakov Fliere partners him in this enthusiastic 1956 recording of the Rachmaninoff Sonata,. Since this is Rachmaninoff, the pianist has most of the hard work. The Shostakovich, from 1946, was the first recording of that piece and has never been published outside Russia. Any opportunity to hear Shostakovich playing his own music is worth taking, since he was an excellent (if sometimes inaccurate) pianist. Here both players do splendidly, and the sound quality is better than you'd expect. --Leslie Gerber
