Veteran mandolinist and singer Ricky Skaggs teaches his new strings some old tricks on this collection, which draws from traditional bluegrass and contemporary country alike. Skaggs has long emphasized the brighter and bouncier side of his music; here "Brand New Strings" celebrates the redemptive power of love while "Enjoy the Ride" and "Spread a Little Love Around" provide inspiration to live life to the fullest. The album turns bluesier with "Lonesome and Dry as a Bone" and bittersweet on the reflective "If I Had It to Do Over Again," while three instrumental romps provide changes of pace romps amid the songcraft.
