About the Artist
Michael Barry has been performing, composing and teaching music in New York for over fifteen years. He has performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Heimetklange in Berlin, The Carnival Caribe in Cartegena, Lincoln Center, SOB’s, colleges and clubs through the U.S., Europe and Canada, and of course, at CBGB’s and the Bitter End. He teaches at the American Institute of Guitar, and was formerly a faculty member at The New School for Social Research/Guitar Study Center. He is the owner of Laughing Buddha Productions, an independent label and production company, and he has composed, arranged and produced music for a variety of artists, as well as for dance companies and musical theater. Mr. Barry’s guitar work has been featured on recordings from Contemporary Folk to Haitian Rara, and from Classical to Rock, for various labels including Alfa International, Shanacie, Virgin, Tess, and LBP. He is an Artist Endorsee for D’addario Strings and A-flat Music Stands, and he ! is currently hard at work composing music for a four CD set based on the seasons.
Album Description
A Classic Christmas is a special collection of music inspired by memories of Christmas’ past. The selections I chose to arrange for this recording represent the music that most readily comes to mind when I think about Christmas. I found myself drawn to the pieces that had both some classical elements and some emotional content that related to my own feelings about Christmas. Although not exactly a Christmas carol, I just had to include Linus and Lucy, from “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, since nothing better captures the childhood exuberance of Christmas than the scene of the Peanuts gang dancing around the piano in the middle of rehearsing their Christmas play. For the most part, I have tried to make the arrangements peaceful and elegant, never opting for complexity when simplicity seemed to convey the proper mood. I hope you will enjoy these pieces as a part of your Christmas celebration for many years to come.
