About the Artist
Timothy Hill’s rare combination of masterful singing, musical sophistication and deeply felt, beautifully crafted lyrics have earned him favorable comparisons with the masters of the golden age of singer-songwriters, even as he forges his own path. He is a singer's singer, a musician's musician, and a songwriter's songwriter. One of the last best kept secrets.

Hill first performed his own songs at age 11. Within a few years, he was studying jazz piano and performing original music on instruments he designed and built, ala Harry Partch. At age 18 he became a founding member of The Harmonic Choir, the first group in the West to pioneer the technique of overtone singing. The group's music earned much critical acclaim around the world and has been heard in numerous feature films. Writing in the New York Times, Robert Palmer singled out Hill as "a virtuoso". Subsequently, he studied Indian classical music, performed his own music on piano in a jazz group which included Bill Frisell on guitar, and forged a close association with pianist Kieth Jarrett, who has remained an abiding influence on his life and music.

In the mid 1990's, Hill returned to traditional song form and troubadorism. Inspired in part by the solo performances of Jeff Buckley and others at clubs like the legendary Sin-é, Hill returned to his roots and was soon appearing frequently in the Downtown New York folk/pop scene. In 1998, he released his first album of songs, This Bright World. The lead track, a nine minute version of the classic tune, "Nature Boy", has been featured on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight on WNEW-FM, New York.

His new album, The Human Place, features ten original songs. In addition to Hill's luminous vocals and acoustic guitar, it features the roots-rock guitar work of fellow singer-songwriter Larry John McNally, whose own songs have been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, and Leni Stern; the soulful cello of Michelle Kinney, for many years a key component in the sound of Susan McKeown's Chanting House; bassist Doug Weiss, an habitué of New York's jazz scene who appears frequently with Brian Blade, Chris Potter and others; drummer George Javori, known for his work with alt-folk-rockers Katell Keineg and Shivaree. It also features the saxophone of Steve Gorn, one of the most highly respected wind players on the new music-world music scene, who has recorded with master percussionist Jack DeJohnette and is a featured player on the recent Paul Simon album “You’re The One”.
