Andi Hoffmann and B-Goes may not be on the tongues of too many chattering hipsters just yet, but that should be just a matter of time and hooking up with the right management team. Hoffmann is a product of Bern, Switzerland (an extraordinarily beautiful and expensive place), who has been playing with various forms of backup since 1989. In 1993, he got bored with his regular stomping grounds in Europe and made his way to our side of the pond, eventually settling in New Orleans. Well the climate fit him perfectly. Hoffmann has come up with a sound he calls "multicultural roots music", a compelling amalgamation of acoustic guitars, fiddle slige guitar, organ, and vocals that draws influence from the bayou and beyond. In his ability to absorb influences and write memorable hooks, Hoffmann is something of a low budget Graceland-era Paul Simon, and his production sensibilities have been favorable (and accurately) compared with those of Daniel Lanois. Andi Hoffmann and B-Goes! combine vitality with mystery, freshness and approach with the professionalism of seasoned musicians. My pick for rock shows this week.

The B-Goes was originally formed in Switzerland in 1989, when Hoffmann got together a group of Swiss musicians for a recording project. In 1993,... read more
