My Sister Sings
Editorial Reviews Doane is one of 16 Atlantic Canadian women on My Sister Sings, a new compilation of songs by Atlantic Canadian musicians including:...
Jim Scarff: New and Noteworthy Celtic Albums; Nov. 1998
This is a collection of 12 women singers and fiddler Natalie MacMaster. It is remarkably similar to the very successful Irish compilation A Woman's Heart, both in its concept and variety of music on the album. The only Celtic music is provided by Cape Bretoners Natalie and Mary Jane Lamond. Other singers include Sarah McLachlan (NS), Melanie Doane (NS), Cindy Church (NS), Marie-Jo Thrio (NB, in french), Pamela Morgan (NF), Shirley Eikhard (NB), Tara MacLean (PEI), Theresa Malenfant (NB), Colleen Power (NF), Four the Moment (NS), and Laura Smith (NS). Some of the proceeds from the sale of this album go to Atlantic Women's Fishnet, a charity.
From the Label
Melanie Doane doesn't think the popularity of women singer/songwriters in North America is a phenomenon. "I think it's finally happening the way it's supposed to happen. Now it's just the norm. It'll stop being a phenomenon. It'll be, oh, isn't that great music and not, oh look, it's another girl. Isn't she cute? It'll be just listen to this powerful person."
