Album Description
"As American as Gershwin, as Romantic as Tchaikovsky" - this is how we described the music of New Jersey's brilliant composer-pianist Mario Lombardo following the release of 'Spectrum' two short years ago. Lombardo's works have been performed by the Symphony Orchestras of Chicago, Cincinnati, New Jersey, Honolulu, and Berlin, and by artists such as violinist Peter Winograd and NY Met tenor Ron Naldi. He was named New Jersey's 'Musician of the Year'in 1997, and his works are published and available worldwide through Warner Brothers Music. 'Spectrum', Lombardo's first-ever commercial CD, features six of his finest orchestral works transcribed for piano and performed by the master-composer himself.

Spectrum also features two of New Jersey's finest classical instrumentalists: Oscar "Oboe" Petty, Montclair's renowned double-reed magician, and Christopher Collins Lee, the popular concert master of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Petty stretches his oboe to its limits in a virtuosic performance of Lombardo's 'Concerto for Oboe and Piano'. He then explores his instrument's many facets in a wondrous performance of Lombardo's romantic 'Rhapsody for Oboe and Piano'. Christopher Lee masterfully displays his great musical maturity and flawless technique in a gorgeous rendition of Mario's lovely 'Serenade for Violin and Piano'. And Mario Lombardo the pianist gets the spotlight as well as he performs 'Spectrum', 'A Suite for All Seasons' and 'Variations in a Mod Mood' with his characteristic flair, and with the insights that only the composer can bring to his own music. The CD closes with a rocking solo-piano version of 'Rock'N'Rhapsody', a piece Lombardo originally wrote for Henry Lewis and the NJSO back in 1970. Bravo, gentlemen, bravo!
