Schulhoff: Symphonies 2 & 5 / Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra / James Conlon
Editorial Reviews Symphony Nos. 2 & 5, Suite for Chamber Orchestra Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Composer Erwin Schulhoff, a native of Prague was an enthusiastic fan of jazz music during the 1920s, and of communism in the 1930s - an unusual combination. This made hime doubly dangerous in the Nazis' view, and they therefore transported him to a German internment camp where he died in 1942. The present CD once more - after the successful Victor Ullmann publication in 2003 (DVD: 92008; CD: 67017) by Capriccio, displays James Conlon's dedicationto "forbidden", "degenerate" music of the 20th century. Together with the Bavarian radio Symphony Orchestra, Conlon has recorded Schulhoff's second and fifth symphony as well as the suite for chamber orchestra inspired by jazz music.
