About the Artist
A native of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Fedoseyev was trained in Moscow, first at the Gnesin Musical Academy and then at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 1971, he was invited by the legendary maestro Yevgeni Mravinsky to conduct the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Philharmonic, and his career was launched. Three years later, he became chief conductor of the Moscow Radio Symphony, a position he holds to this day. He has also appeared throughout Europe and the U.S., establishing relationships with leading orchestras and opera companies.

Album Description
Dmitri Shostakovich's Eighth is one of his largest and most "Mahlerian" symphonies (he admired and studied Mahler), and has become more and more popular in recent years after first meeting with disapproval from Soviet authorities at its premiere in 1943. This is a live recording at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, May 5, 1985.

Inside the booklet is a rare photo that shows Shostakovich as a firefighter during the siege of Leningrad in World War II, on the roof of the Leningrad Conservatoire, 1941.
