Alphonse Daudet's melodrama L'Arlésienne, with incidental music by Georges Bizet, flopped miserably at its Paris premier in 1873. If Jean-Claude Malgoire undertook this resuscitation of the original with thoughts of reversing that failure, he has not quite succeeded, at least for an audience that cannot understand French. Most of its two hours are devoted to the narrator, pretending to be a half-dozen different Provençal-accented characters, as often as not muttering under his breath. Bizet's music is best appreciated from the familiar suites he created for full orchestra from the small pit band and chorus of the original. At least as experienced here, it proves neither haunting dramatically nor as colorful as in the orchestral versions. Students of French literature and theater and other Francophiles may find the well-recorded set of interest. Others will find it a rather tedious experience. --Paul Turok
