It isn't often that little-known performers can produce such competitive versions of major works. But in this case, virtual unknowns have made my favorite recordings of Mozart's Flute Concertos. Mikael Helasvuo is one of the best flutists I've ever heard. He plays with extremely beautiful tone, and he communicates a sense of joy throughout this disc that's very infectious. The orchestra, which comes from Finland, also plays extremely well, conveying the same spirit as the soloist and coordinating with him very well. I also like to hear this music on period instruments, but when I want modern instruments this is the version I reach for. --Leslie Gerber
