MAHLER: Das Lied Von Der Erde / Vienna Philharmonic / Bruno Walter
Editorial Reviews Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) Das Lied Von Der Erde The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Recorded live in concert on May 24th, 1936 in Vienna) One of the central conducters of the 20th century was Bruno Walter and as a very young man he became the composer's loyal assistant and champion, later playing an enormous role in increasing the acceptance of Mahler's works abroad. Here Walter conducts one of the most intense and amazing recordings of Das Lied von der Erde (The Song from the Earth), a synoptic late work which Mahler himself never heard. On one hand, it does not seem to fit into the Mahler canon - but on the other hand, it does. However, we should perhaps start at the begining of the story. Beautifully conceived with extensive line notes, come and learn the story of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde", a score that Mahler himself wrote as follows to Bruno Walter: "...I myself do not know how it should all be called. But I was very diligent. I have derived great pleasure in creating it and I think it is the most personal work I have yet composed."
