For many, 20th century composers seem inordinately preoccupied with intricacies of the techniques of their craft. But the music of Italian composer Scelsi--direct, personal, raw--astonishes. The extravagance of the music is astonishing, too. These are not chamber works scored for a Pierrot- sized ensemble, but orchestral and choral music on an almost Wagnerian scale. Hymnos, for 86 musicians, is the largest of the compositions on this recording. Jürg Wyttenbach performs passionately with just the proper degree of indulgence. --Joshua Cody
