Berwald was the first great Scandinavian Romantic composer, and one of the most interesting symphonists of the first half of the 19th century. His long life made him a contemporary of composers ranging from Beethoven to Wagner, and he was a particular friend of Mendelssohn, whose music his sometimes resembles. Three of his four symphonies are masterpieces (one was orchestrated from sketches discovered after his death) that belong in the collection of anyone who enjoys the Mendelssohn/Schumann school. In some respects, Berwald is more interesting than either, combining Schumann's love of formal experimentation with Mendelssohn's orchestral brilliance. Sixten Ehrling has long been the world's finest exponent of this music, and this is his definitive recording of it. --David Hurwitz
