Michael Torke: One
Editorial Reviews Last fall, the boxed set of Michael Torkes complete recordings was picked by The New York Times as one of the top classical albums of the year. With his two best-known early pieces, Ecstatic Orange and Yellow Pages, written in 1985 while still a composition student at Yale, Michael Torke practically defined post-minimalism, a music in which eclectic young composers utilize the repetitive structures of a previous generation to incorporate musical techniques from both the classical tradition and the contemporary pop world. Recent projects include a millennium symphony commission from Michael Eisner and the Walt Disney Company performed by Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra; the Central Park Trilogy written for PBS Great Performances (which was nominated for an Emmy), and The Contract, an evening-length story ballet for the National Ballet of Canada.
Gramophone
"Some of the most optimistic, joyful and thoroughly uplifting music to appear in recent years."
The New York Times
"A master orchestrator whose shimmering timbral palette makes him the Ravel of his generation."
