So let us draw them back, unfasten the guilded espagnolettes and catches, open wide the windows, and let in some fresh air! Then, giving cliché and convention a good shake over the balustrade, take a new fresh look at the French mélodie of the second half on the nineteenth century. This is a world of intimacy, of the small format, briefly depicting a scene, an atmosphere, a mood, like the German lied. The harmonic refinement and apt prosody, the art and sensitivity shown by the composers who indulged in the repertoire, give it a status, close to the 'miniature', that was later to become honored by Bizet, Duparc, Poulenc, Ravel, and Debussy. Each of the three composers included in this recording left his mark on the mélodie. Beautifully packaged with a booklet filled with libretto and extensive liner note in English and French, Les demoiselles de...give free rein to their imagination. Warmly acclaimed at their first concerts at the Villa Medici in Rome in 1997, these three musicians continue to examine the repertoire of the vocal duet through constant research and work on interpretation.
