The Quatuor Mosaiques is the class act among chamber ensembles that play on authentic instruments, and they show it yet again in these readings of two of Mozart's most accomplished pieces, each of them written for the talented if unprincipled Anton Stadler, for whom the sublime Clarinet Concerto was also created. Once you get over the fact that the quintet sounds as if it's in A flat, not A, the characterization is admirable. The period string foursome responds with remarkable acuity to Mozart's play of styles and topics, while their guest, clarinetist Wolfgang Meyer, coaxes some wonderfully sweet sounds out of his basset clarinet, a replica of the type of instrument Stadler used to such extraordinary effect. Filling out the CD, pianist Patrick Cohen joins Meyer and the Mosaiques' violist, Anita Mitterer, in a superb account of the Kegelstatt Trio. --Ted Libbey
