The Czech State Philharmonic is not the same orchestra as the Czech Philharmonic, but rather the provincial ensemble based in Brno, Moravia. If they were playing Beethoven, this might prove a problem. But this was Leo Janáček's home town, and the orchestra has an unbroken tradition of Janáček performance dating back to the composer himself, spectacularly maintained by conductor and Janáček specialist Frantisek Jilek. As a result, Serebrier, no slouch himself in this music, draws a superbly idiomatic response from his band, and Reference's recording captures the proceedings with sound of hair-raising impact (14 trumpets in the Sinfonietta; organ and bells in Taras Bulba). Go ahead, blow up your speakers! --David Hurwitz --This text refers to the LP Record edition.
