In Schubert's day, piano music for four hands was domestic music for friends to play together. It's difficult for contemporary players to capture that spirit of house music. Today's pianists are trained to play to the house, to project the big picture. When they do scale down their playing, they often don't know how to keep from becoming dull. All of this is to indicate just how unusual is this team of Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen . Their playing is on just the right scale. The keep Schubert's music gentle, but they never become dull due to their wonderfully subtle inflection. This music may not be profound, but it's lovely. --Leslie Gerber
