This release brings together four works by Paul Constantinescu (1909-1963), a Romanian composer. They cover his entire career and represent the man quite well. Constantinescu is working very much from local or regional music sources, creating a kind of Byzantine music, traditional to that part of the globe. The Ballad of the Outlaw for cello and orchestra is a tone-poem (not a concerto) very much in a Straussian idiom (it will remind you of Till Eulenspiegel with a Romanian flair). The man knows his chops and you should find this music quite enjoyable. --Paul Cook
