Couperin reached his full development in this second of his four collections of harpsichord works. While not every one of these little pieces is memorable, there are gems scattered liberally throughout the suites. Kenneth Gilbert's playing is lively, and he does a gratifying job of embellishing his repeats. His only current competition comes from another, more recent, recording on the same label. I remember a gorgeous series by Blandine Verlet using antique harpsichords (Gilbert's is modern) which would be worth buying if it were ever revived. Meanwhile, at its current price, Gilbert's series is definitely worthwhile for Baroque music lovers.--Leslie Gerber
