Album Description
The Keyboard Concerto in D minor is the longest, most idiomatic, and most complex of Johann Sebastian Bach's eight keyboard concerti. It has three movements of similar length: an energetic first movement, a sweeping G minor slow movement based on a basso ostinato, and an exhiliarating finale in triple meter that matches the initial movement in terms of breadth and depth. The Symphony No. 35 in D, K. 385, "Haffner," was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in July, 1782 and revised shortly thereafter. The orchestration of this symphony--pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, timpani and strings--is among his largest. The performance is based on Mozart's original manuscript; double repeats that the composer originally intended for the first two movements are included here. Gustav Holst originally intended his "Gavotte" to be a movement in his Brook Green Suite, composed for the St. Paul's Girls School Junior Orchestra in 1933, but withdrew it. This is the premiere recording of this movement in Holst's original orchestration. Pianist Linnea Bardarson, heard on the Bach, is a native of Seattle, Washington. A winner of the Seattle Philharmonic Concerto Competition, she has performed with Collage New Music, Kaleidoscope, and Chorus Pro Musica. She is a member of the music faculties of University of Massachusetts Boston, Northeastern University. Conductor Jon Ceander Mitchell is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He is Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Music Department of the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he is also Conductor of the Chamber Orchestra. He has over forty publications to his credit and in recent years has guest conducted in Poland, Bulgaria, and England.
