Volume 3 of the Sixteen's Victoria series focuses on sumptuous music for triple choir. The Psalm setting Lætatus sum was the first triple-choir music to be published in Rome; it was followed years later by the "parody" Mass Lætatus sum and the triple-choir Magnificat recorded here. These last have relatively little (as "parodies" go) actual music in common with their model, but they are equally resplendent and varied, with extended sections for reduced voices. Following Spanish practice circa 1600, instruments accompany the singers here: organ and bassoon with Choir II, cornett and sackbuts with Choir III (the solo voices of Choir I remain unaccompanied). Harry Christophers's musicians perform splendidly, with the entrances and exits of the various choirs sounding unusually clear. --Matthew Westphal
